By Rev. Rebekah Hays Estera
Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday following Pentecost and is a time to affirm that Trinitarianism is a central belief. While it is a moveable feast, it often occurs during June, Pride Month.
A Triune God is queer.
Queer like God who speaks of Godself as us and we.
Whose pronouns are God, God’s, Godself.
Who made us in the very image of Them.
Whose very nature is Community.
And invites us to create Beloved Community.
Queer like Jesus, who was a man and yet only shared genes with a woman.
Who spoke of himself as a mothering hen.
Who was known to his disciples by a new identity at the Resurrection.
And still recognizable as who he always had been and was meant to be.
The scars of that Transformation still visible.
Queer like She who hovered over the waters at Creation.
But we can only understand her as fire and wind and a strange bird.
The Spirit still hovers over her new creation as you are formed into who you are truly, deeply meant to be.
She has spoken through the prophets.
And She speaks through you.
Queer like a God who fathers us and mothers us.
Who invites us into co-creating.
Into laboring.
To bring our full selves into this broken world.
And in doing so, to bring healing.
My beloved queer siblings, you are made in the divine and queer image of a Triune God.
Amen.
Author Bio: Rebekah is a deacon in the Episcopal Church and based in California’s Bay Area. They feel called to the diaconate because their heart breaks for the hurt of this world while being excited to build the kin-dom of God on earth as it is in Heaven with their siblings in Christ. Baking is a spiritual practice for Rebekah, and in her free time, she loves to spend time outside, try new foods, visit museums, and borrow entirely too many library books.
